Sharing Personal Information on Business Page Facebook

Your Worst Nightmare On The Front Page!

You wake up in the morning stretch, grab that cup of coffee and step outside and get the morning paper (remember those rolls of paper that were delivered by a young male child on a bike?).  You spit your coffee all over the porch when you see yourself on the front page!  It's a picture of you in 7th grade…with braces…wearing your headgear and a puka shell necklace.  The headline reads, “Found This Photo And Thought Your Clients Should See It.”   You then jolt from sleep and realize it was just a nightmare.  The same nightmare you have about having your personal Facebook profile information shared with all of your business page fans.

Yesterday we calmed your fear of someone posting negative comments on your social sites, and today we take on an even greater fear.

SOCIAL MEDIA FEAR #2:  MY BUSINESS CONTACTS WILL SEE MY PERSONAL INFORMATION ON FACEBOOK.

This is a fear many business owners, or employees who have been tasked with setting up the business Facebook Page, struggle with. I hear from office managers, who say they were told to set up a Facebook PAGE for the company but they don't want to attach their PERSONAL PROFILE to it.  If set up correctly, the information on your personal profile and the business pages you create and manage are never shared. Your business contacts (or Fans) will not see your PERSONAL PROFILE or updates, and your personal friends and contacts will not see your business posts from your PAGE (unless you strategically share them from one profile to the other).

Here are the steps to take that will calm your fear of those embarrassing photos being splashed across the business PAGE:

  1. Create (if you don't have one already) a PERSONAL PROFILE.

Do NOT create a second profile for yourself in the attempt to keep it for business use.  That would create two profiles and when someone searches for you, it will cause confusion (not to mention Facebook terms of agreement state you can only have ONE profile-see #4).Even if you do not want to actually use Facebook for your own personal use yet, set it up with your real name and contact information. You can set your privacy settings to private, or FRIENDS ONLY, if you don't intend on using your profile, and you do not have to post anything or connect with anyone.

  2. Now create a Facebook BUSINESS PAGE.

You will be added as an admin, and you can add additional admins to share the marketing tasks as well. When you post on your business page you are seen as the business, not your person (again, unless you WANT to comment as yourself on the business page and share that post with your personal profile friends, but it will not happen automatically). People will not seeing your personal information (photo, email address, phone number), unless you put it on the contact information area. Kind of like a website.  Your business page should have the business contact information.

  3. Now you have a simple login process.

When you want to post something to the Facebook BUSINESS PAGE, you simply log in with your PERSONAL login information and look for the drop down arrow in the upper right corner.  You will see YOUR profile photo and when you select your BUSINESS PAGE from the drop down, the profile picture will change to be your business logo or photo used for that page.  You will be taken to the PAGE and you can post your update as the business.

  4. Add another Facebook admin for safety and assistance.

If you add an additional person to share the admin responsibilities, they will follow the same process.  They log in with their OWN personal log in credentials.  If they have been added as an admin (they must LIKE the page and then YOU can add them in the ADMIN settings for the page), they will see the same drop down menu options to go to that page.

So you may be more confused by now, but hopefully you are not afraid!   Go ahead and wipe this fear off your list.
